Outing to Oxford

(Download the Flyer here)

A walking outing in the centre of Oxford. (Driving between towers is pointless, as frequently there is simply nowhere to park! Either park at The Pear Tree Park and Ride (just off A34), and catch the bus which stops right outside the first tower, or try City of Oxford College, in Oxpens Road, which £5 all day, but closes at 5:00pm. Council carparks are not cheap – typically £4 for 2 hours).

10:30-11:30am       St Mary Magdalene, (in St Giles road), OX1 3AE

(10 bells, 7-1-12cwt, Taylors 1988-2001)

12:00am-1.00pm    New College, New College Lane, OX1 3BN

(10, 20-0-12 cwt)

Lunch. There are many pubs to choose from, and it is unlikely we could all fit into one! The Turf Tavern is close to New College, if you can find it, and was beloved of Morse. But so was the White Horse in the Broad!

2.30-3.30pm            St Thomas, St Thomas Street, OX1 1PP

(10, 11-2-6 cwt, Taylors 1992-1996)

4:00-5:00pm           Christchurch Cathedral, St Aldates, OX1 1DP

(12, 31-0-23 cwt)

5.30pm -6.30pm     Carfax, OX1 1ET

(6, 15-0-22 cwt Richard Keene, 1676)

At the end of the day, for those who wish to visit, Adrian & Gill’s boat should be moored on the Oxford Canal in Jericho. The Bookbinders (another pub Morse frequented) is nearby.

There are opportunities to ring on Sunday morning at some of the other towers (e.g. St Giles, St Aldates) for those staying over. The locals would be grateful for an idea of numbers beforehand.
