Thirsk area
Saturday, 26 April 2025 10.30 - 1pmTry A Tower is a new initiative aimed at newer ringers who have not yet progressed to ringing methods and/or those who ring at their home tower but haven’t yet been along to any of the main branch events. A friendly introduction to the slightly wider ringing world!
We’ll be trying two towers in the Thirsk area:
Felixkirk - 6 bells, YO7 2EG
Ringing 10.30 - 11.30am
Thirkleby - 6 bells, YO7 2AU
Ground floor ring, toilet available
Ringing 12 - 1pm
This pair of towers have been chosen as the bells are lightweight, easy to ring, and approachable for new ringers.
After the ringing we’re planning on going for a group lunch at a nearby pub. If you’re able to come along that would be very nice, but not compulsory!

Try A Tower Q&A
Q: I've only just started ringing, can I come?
A: Yes! Different people count ‘just started’ differently, but so long as you’ve had a few 1-2-1 lessons with a teacher you’d be very welcome.
Q: Will the level of ringing be suitable for me?
A: Yes! We’ll be adapting the session to suit who has come along, rather than only inviting those who meet rigid expectations to take a rope. If you’re thinking about coming, it would be appreciated if you could pop us an email with where you’re at in your ringing journey. This will help us plan the morning most effectively, to help you get the most out of your time!
Q: Can I bring my teacher/other experienced ringer from my tower?
A: Yes! A key part of learning to ring is having a more experienced person standing by you for in-the-moment advice, and sometimes people do better if this is someone they already know.
Q: What if my teacher isn’t available to come with?
A: Also fine! We will have teachers and group helpers present to support you, and can help note down what you’ve rung to report back.
Q: What ability do I need to have to come as a helper?
A: We’re anticipating primarily be ringing rounds, call changes, kaleidoscope exercises, plain hunt, and maybe method introductions (ART levels 1-3). Keeping right when others go wobbly or wrong is it’s own skill to being the least experienced ringer in a band, so if you’re able to or are working towards this separate ability then you’d be most welcome! Depending on time and numbers we hope to ring something a bit more challenging for the helpers at the end of each tower session.
Q: You are visiting my home tower, can I come?
A: Yes! Ringing on familiar bells but with a different set of people is a different experience to ringing at standard practice. Plus you’ll be able to get to know others across the branch who’re at a similar stage in their ringing journey.
Q: I have a different question that isn’t covered here, how do I find out the info?
A: Email us! While we’ve tried to anticipate the most common questions, there’s bound to be something we’ve missed. We can then reply to you directly as well as adding the info here in case others were wondering the same.
[Apologies for the late notice of the details of this event. It would be appreciated if you're able to share the information at practice this week.]
